Licence Variations
Any permanent changes you wish to make to your licence need to be made by way of a variation application.
There are two types of variation, a major variation, or a minor variation.
Major Variation
If you wish to make any change to the operating schedule of your licence, you will need to submit what is called a major variation.
Typically this can include:
An increase in trading hours
Removal of an existing condition on your licence
Adding an additional licensable activity
The process is the same as a new application in that you apply to the council, and notify all the relevant responsible authorities of your intended changes.
There is a 28 day consultation period with a blue notice on display for the entire period, an application fee to pay to the council and you are again required to advertise your application in the local press.
If there are unresolved objections at the end of this period, the application will again be determined by a Licensing Sub- Committee hearing, the same as a new application.
Minor Variation
A change to the layout plan of the premises
Adding certain conditions to the operating schedule after agreement with a responsible authority.
This is a quicker and cheaper option. The consultation process lasts for 10 days, and the application is determined within 15 working days.
Councils charge a fixed fee of £89 for a minor variation application.
One point to note with a minor variation is there is no right to a hearing should the application attract objections. If this is the case the application is automatically refused.

DPS Variation
This change can have immediate effect, but the police have 14 days to conduct a background search on the newly appointed DPS and object under the Prevention of Crime and Disorder, should they have grounds to do so.
If there is a police objection the application will be determined by a licence sub committee.
